Notes: With Roth and the Van Halen family set to launch again next month I thought I'd upload some old VH. It sucked when Roth left, I totally lost interest in the band. A bit of a rarity here. Taper did do a good job with this recording, all instruments are fairly clear. The beginning is missing... As "Intruder" starts you can hear him say "I got about 5 minutes left on this tape, I got to turn it around" which is sorta near the 45 minute mark (side 1 of a 90 min tape) so maybe he didn't record the beginning of the show. Also have heard these BR shows (one from '84) were being kept under wraps. The 84 Baton Rouge was never circulated. This is the only CVH show from Louisiana to circulate (before 2007 at least). Anyway, enjoy!

Notes:

This is the second night of the 1982 San Francisco run. In my opinion this show is even better than the first night in terms of quality and performance. Not that the first show was chop liver, but this one has a warm sound that the first one did not have. Eddie's solo is airtight and Dave spends more time talking to the crowd than the first night.

This comes straight from the master and is undoubtedly the best possible version of this show you can get. I have heard parts of "Four on the Floor" and "Dive Bomber" and the difference is night and day. There are no speed/pitch problems, only some small cuts, probably when the taper was flipping tapes. In my opinion, this show rivals any of the North American shows from the 1982-83 Hide Your Sheep tour.

Many people have been asking for a clean copy of 9/15/82 San Francisco, and here it is. Pure, clean, untouched by any bootleg company. Seamless transitions between tracks. I am very happy to bring this to you and I hope you enjoy it. I hope that everyone who had a flawed 9/15/82 will be able to replace it with this copy, and that this copy will become the standard for this show in Van Halen trading circles.

Notes: The band apparently rented an LA movie studio and invited a handful of people to hear their rehearsal for the 1982 tour. Fun intro by Roth, although a little hard to make out at times. While this is a fun listen, the bad part is the quality, which is very rough. While all the instruments and vocals can be heard, the sound is a bit muffled. The story I heard is that out taper was worried about being caught, so his recorded was under his jacket. There are also a few crackles on the tape. The order of songs is about what the band took out on the road as the tour kicked off on July 14 in Augusta, Georgia but it was changed up as is went on.

CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is a REMASTER of a torrent that is already on DIME: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=337305
-------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, thanks to Markum7 for posting this gem.

After listening to this I decided to try my hand at making it sound a bit more listenable.  First I used a bit of noise reduction to remove the ambient tape hiss using the first few seconds of the first track to "train" iZotope's noise reduction plugin.  The cool thing about this is that removing this type of noise doesn't seem to degrade the high frequencies very much at all.  I then used the Sony Graphic EQ to max out some of the upper frequencies and shape the bass so it is a bit less boomy.  I used my ears.

Overall it turned out good.  You can now hear the vocals and guitar MUCH better.   In fact there is room for more EQ and noise reduction if anyone wants to try their hand at this.  I made another mix (not this one)that sounds even better (to my ears) but unfortunately batch processing the files using a "one-size-fits-all" EQ setting caused some of the songs to clip way past the the peak levels especially during Eddie's guitar solo.

Of course, before downloading you should listen to the Before/After mp3 sound sample included in the comments below.

Notes:

This is ***name witheld*** source. I don't know who that is or what that means, but that is the information I was given when I traded for this.

For whatever reason, my copy has "Ice Cream Man" at the end of Disc 1 and the beginning of Disc 2. In the interest of not screwing around with things, I've left it this way. Please trade it this way in the future.

There is a cut in the master source during D.O.A., and whoever originally indexed this decided to split it up into two tracks. In the interest of not screwing around with things, I've left it this way. Please trade it this way in the future.

This is not to be confused with the more commonly circulated second night show on 9/15/82. This is definitely the first night, 9/14/82, because Dave mentions that it is the first time they've played the Cow Palace. I seriously doubt he would say that on the second night.

VG audience recording in my opinion. The bass is a little light, but overall this is a quality show with a bonus of "D.O.A.," which was not played all that often on this tour.

Notes:
For completists only. Muddy recording with tape hiss. The recording is missing "Everybody Wants Some!!" and "Bottoms Up!",
hence it's about 20 minutes shorter than the typical 1982 recording. I'm not sure if those songs were just not played, whether they weren't recorded, or some genius along the way left them off of the tape to fit everything on a 90 minute tape. Side 2 of the tape (Disc 2 on CD) is muddier sounding than side one (Disc 1). The taper is also pretty obnoxious throughout and keeps screaming "Hang 'em High" prior to that song being played. During "Romeo Delight," someone close to the taper laughs loudly when Dave says "I forgot the fucking words!"

Editing was very minimal, all that was done was getting rid of gaps. An FFP file for easy checking with Trader's Little Helper, as well as shntool results are included.

Notes: The recent up of the San Francisco 9/14 and 9/15/82 shows reminded me of "twin" shows played 11/14 and 11/15/82 in New Jersey. Here is the first night. Not a bad recording for the time, but it before the end of the gig. This is all I know that circulates. Got this from the taper back in the day. Enjoy!
